More twitter goodness

Posted in tech, ubuntu by jerichokb on March 26th, 2008

This one’s for Londoners: follow the tubinator for updates one which tube lines are currently playing up (updated every 15minutes). However, the short form of tweets means messages can be cut off, as in the current “Broken tubes: Circle (Part suspended), District (Part suspended), East London (Bus service), Hammersmith” - surely removing the ‘Broken tubes:’ bit would be sensible, as you’re reading the status for a reason. I might message the guy who created it; it appears to have surfaced earlier this month.

So, to recap my twitter treats:

  • twitter from irssi,
  • google calendar integration,
  • follow the plotline of a short story (or at least, one strand of it),
  • and now tube updates.

Is there anything twitter can’t do? Aside from make me another cup of tea?

Earthquake!

Posted in ubuntu by jerichokb on February 27th, 2008

Wow, that was quite something, made me feel all a little queasy inside. The desk was shaking - I thought it was my external hard drive playing up - and then I noticed the bed was shaking as well. Weird.

It was interesting to join the reaction in #ubuntu-uk - we were all talking about it, throwing in links to the above and to google maps pinpointing the epicentre well before BBC News 24 stood up and mentioned it, and before any real mention was made on the BBC news website. Now that’s community-driven news for you. [I was actually listening to lugradio when it happened...]

BBC news website is also reporting massive traffic from the UK, as is only to be expected: the highest I saw it was at 86% above normal, but then at 1am, I guess that’s only a few extra UK readers :)

My next favourite word

Posted in Uncategorized by jerichokb on January 12th, 2008

That’s the next one in this series, not the second-favourite word of mine. It’s also one I just made up:

kewliolicious (adj) - designates a general positive agreement. As in, ‘I’m going to watch the match later.’ ‘Kewliolicious.’ To be said only with a large dose of irony.

Home coming

Posted in Uncategorized by jerichokb on December 21st, 2007

If there’s one thing I hate more than bendy buses trying to run me over in London, it’s the train from Liverpool Street to my home town. The mainline bit is ok; it’s when you get past Ipswich and the train stops at every little village on the line that it gets frustrating. That said, it’s good to be back. (more…)

Meteor Shower

Posted in Uncategorized by jerichokb on August 13th, 2007

I was reminded rather last minute of tonight’s meteor shower, but I managed to catch a few flying through the skies above the east of england nonetheless. I stood in the garden, hand blocking out a nearby street lamp (not so lucky as to live in the countryside, me), and there: a tiny streak of light, lasting perhaps half a second. And again, a few minutes later. Unfortunately, cloud has started moving over, so I am unlikely to see many more for now. But, I will have another look soon. Apparently it will peak just before sunrise. Only a couple of hours to go…

What is up with facebook?

Er, I’ve been having some problems with some people’s profiles recently - disappearing and then a few minutes later suddenly coming back as normal. Is this just regular maintainence?

Good evening.

Well every blog has to have a first post, and this is it. I have nothing very interesting to say at the moment as I’m in the middle of exams (damn university, wanting to test me), but I will come up with something to say soon, I promise.
